Caleb was born 1830 in Habersham Co., GA. His mother was Lucinda GRIFFETH of the Pickens Co., GA GRIFFETHs whose sister married Col. Sam TATE who, along with the GRIFFETHs started the big marble business in Georgia.
Caleb married Hannah BERRY in Union Co., GA and they had 4 children. He died from disease at the Camp Douglas POW Camp while serving the CSA. He is buried in the Confederate Mound at Oakwoods Cem. in Chicago, IL. Oddly, several of his grandchildren and great-grandchildren wound up in Summit Co., OH during the early 1900's, leaving the farms behind and instead working the factories.
It is assumed that Caleb was s/o of a George BOWERS who was on the 1840 Union Co., GA census. I have no proof that George was from anywhere in particular and since his mother's father was directly from Boston, MA, it might be logical that this George was also from up North and not part of what some people think is the Edgefield Dist., SC clan.
